The original gangsters consisted of leaders that formed families. The Five Families ruled New York City. Most of the leaders were from Italy. For decades, members of these families could not become leaders unless the men were one hundred percent Italian. Father, mother, all the relatives had to be pure blood from Italy, preferably the island of Sicily. Investments spread north towards Canada during prohibition when alcohol was imported from the north. Investments spread south when resorts were built in Havana, Cuba. Family members relocated to Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and major investments took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, where cash was skimmed from casinos after prohibition ended.
