Sales Business : What business will you be in?
The sales people were predators picking up children. They sold candy. Shady business men from the East Bay over the Richmond Bridge employed by a candy factory unable to sell to stores. Businesses sell supplies, products, or services. Three hours away was a candy store that sold cheap chocolates in boxes with names and little advertising. Peanut brittle, chocolate turtles, sometimes the chocolate had worms or worst: Mold, rot, but the businessmen wanted to get rid of it so they hired drivers that were recently released from prison. Actually, looking back in hindsight, I got lucky again. My driver wasn’t an ex-con, she was heroin addict. As a young girl, she quit school to become a singer. Laura Branigan was her idol. As we drove from town to town selling candy, the heroin addict without a car radio sang Laura Branigan’s songs that started with catching titles like Gloria, How Am I Supposed to Live Without You, and the lyrics to Self Control. The driver failed as a Laura Branigan impersonator, took to drugs, recovered from heroin, and found herself dating another driver at the candy factory. Together the drivers created a scam using poor kids, especially children in foster care. The drivers bought the candy for $1.00. They loaded their vans and posted “Help Wanted” signs at the video game arcade. Like a fish on a hook, they caught me while I was wandering around watching my friends play with asteroids that were shot out of space with a miniature triangle of a ship. The ship rotated 360 degrees. The ship held every child’s attention, but mine. I was interested in making money to buy jeans. Remember my friends didn’t want to be seen with me. I wore tan corduroy pants that weren’t nearly as fashionable as 501 jeans. The best friend I had gave me his philosophy on the dilemma by saying, “If you buy Levis 501 jeans instead of those cords you are wearing, we might hang out with you.” 501 jeans? I didn’t know where to begin. Where does one buy 501 jeans? What does the 501 stand for? I would have worry about those answers later. The first priority was to earn money to buy the famous 501s. The Help Wanted sign had a phone number I dialed from the kitchen.
